Why is the word одновременно sometimes pronounced одновремЕнно instead of одноврЕменно? The second pronunciation, as I understand it, is technically correct right?

I am guessing this is just another word in Russian like твОрог / творОг, which has two pronunciations. If so, what other words are like this? Thanks.

PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail

Florida PostSecret Exhibit

Over 400 postcards are now on display at the Brevard Art Museum.
1463 Highland Ave | Melbourne, FL | 321-242-0737 | facebook event page
Here are some exhibit comments from when the exhibit was in Canada.
I flew from Calgary to see if my secret was here. It is. . .
I'm still shaking.
Weird - and an unsuitable display for this museum.
I've been here twice already. It's disgustingly comforting to know that people share my shocking secrets.
I held my breath for most of the time in the exhibit to keep from crying. I cried in the bathroom.
I parked in the no parking zone to come see PostSecret.
The PostSecret exhibition tour is directed by International Arts & Artists and will be traveling through 2010.

Birthday Song?

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Good morning! I was curious if anyone would be able help me track down a song. I am looking for an audio version of " Пусть бегут неуклюже" the 'Russian happy birthday song' from "Krokodil Gena i Cheburashka".

I am making a birthday CD for the boyfriend and he only remembers snippets from the song from his childhood and I think putting the song on the CD would be a nice surprise. I have found several versions on YouTube (including a Soviet-era one which was very amusing to watch!) but no mp3 versions. =/

If anyone has any ideas they would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

ETA: Hmm, the more I search for the song the more I am convinced that maybe I have the title wrong? I hope someone knows what I meant. Sorry about that, my Russian is only basic at the moment.

Skype me!

Hi!
I learn english, and need some practice. If you want to speak Russian - call me via Skype, we can speak in russian and in english.
Skype nick: ytilin, online after 19 p.m. (GMT).
On the way to record yesterday, I walked past a man who had just been hit by a car. He was lying in the bike lane, bleeding from a nasty head wound.

Why was he in the bike lane? Because it is impossible to walk on the sidewalk; it is completely taken up with cars that are illegally parked there. Did a bicycle hit him because he was walking in the bicycle lane? No; a car hit him while he was in the bike lane.

Cars have taken over the sidewalks. They have taken over the bicycle lanes.

Where are people supposed to walk in Beijing?

I'd just like to know.

Agricultural vocab.

  • May. 16th, 2008 at 11:13 PM
This might prove a bit too obscure, but I'm looking for resources for learning rural/agricultural vocabulary - does anyone know of any journals/papers or online resources available?

No I have not dropped off the face of the earth. I've just been busy. Highlights:

I have a warrant for my arrest for not having paid a biking ticket and failing to show up to court for an arraignment. Ugh, I really don't want to deal with this right now, and one of my friends is freaking out 1000x more than I am about my own situation. I just thought it was funny, but apparently it's *uber* serious. It can wait till Monday.

I love being built. Being a built gay man in college opens up a whole new straight homoerotic world for you. Of course, not that I personally think I have that great a body, but other men seem to think so. Flex for me, they say. Nice pecs, they say. What do you do to get those abs, they say. Why let me show you, I say. Hahaha. Although homoeroticism is nice and all, I still like the fact that all this brotherly love between me and my straight gym buddies is purely platonic. Hm... it's probably better that I DON'T have any gay gym buddies, otherwise that would just make lots of unnecessary drama for mamas of sorts.

I'm typing, and I just realized how much homework I still have left to do. And I'm beat. It was 103 today in Stanford, and lucky us they closed all dining halls for dinner and made us go to White Plaza to get food. The only good part about that was that I got to see a lot of hot shirtless muscle men. The food was ok. Never enough, though. Kinda ticks me off. I studied naked last night and was *going* to again this night but I feel like being social and well... the two don't mix well in college. Most of the time.

Exotic Erotic is tomorrow. One piece of clothing for men, two for women. That's the requirement of this very scandalous party held annually. I'll see if I can work my charms on this one lad I've become fond of. And, of course, another opportunity to see scantily clad men.

Geez, and here I was literally racking my brains as to why I've been so... erm... seksualno ozabochen lately, when between straight homoeroticism, being a wanted fugitive, the heat, and half-naked men, what do you expect?

Two in a row for me...

Why in the masculine is it быть одному (as in "мне нравится быть одному")? Usually after быть either nominative or instrumental cases are used-- in which case it would be быть один or быть одним.

Have books collecting dust?

Donate books to your local "books to prisons" project!

The U.S. has less than 5 percent of the world’s population, but more than a quarter of the world’s prisoners. Nearly one percent of American adults are incarcerated, the highest rate in the world, but many prisoners have little access to books or educational material. They face substantial barriers and are cut off from family and friends on the outside. While some prisons have libraries, many do not. Of those that do, access and selection can be extremely limited. Usually, prisoners are not allowed to receive books from friends or family. Thus, "book to prisons" programs are one of the few options available to these individuals.

Find a program near you!

If you're around DC (like myself), click here for the local program.

Greatest Book Needs

1. Dictionaries (English, Spanish-English)
2. Atlases and almanacs
3. Learning a language (especially Spanish)
4. How-to (especially woodworking, plumbing, gardening, car mechanics, small motor repair)
5. Science and nature (including magazines like Discover)
6. Personal finance or starting a business
7. Drawing or art
8. Math or GED preparation
9. Computers or electronics (including up-to-date magazines)
10. Law
11. American Indians, Mayans, or Aztecs
12. African American, Latin American, or classical (Roman,Greek) history
13. Fiction: westerns, sci-fi, fantasy, horror/thrillers, African American authors

HOUSTON OVERRUN WITH ELECTRONICS-KILLING ANTS
(and I really wish I were making this up)

It sounds like the plot of a Roger Corman film, I know, but as reported on our sister blog, apparently swaths of Texas are being overrun by "Crazy Rasberry Ants," named for their discoverer (and exterminator) Tom Rasberry, not for the tasty fruit.

The ants, for some reason, are attracted to electrical equipment, including your Mac. A friendly chat with an AppleCare representative revealed that AppleCare policies do not cover insect infestation. Instead, the rep helpfully suggested that your renter's or homeowner's policy might cover the computer instead.

The ants arrived in the U.S. via a shipping container. They reproduce quickly, and are very difficult to kill. Might be worth it to keep an eye out. Apparently, they've been spotted near Johnson Space Center, and who knows what secrets they could be after.

More info here and here

Bonus points: they seem to be resistant to over the counter pesticides as well.

Woah. . .

I'm seriously impressed and really must give a shout out to the people at Copeland and Shaw who have managed to fill, ship, and deliver an order to me in less than 48 hours. What was in my order you ask?

250g Earl Grey Lavender, which has become my new staple tea replacing my previously beloved Earl Grey Bravo after Adagio oh so cruelly reformulated it a few years ago.

And then three 50g samples to see which is the best for iced tea:
The Emperor's Seven
Special Summer Tea
Cinnamon Glow (not sure how well it would be iced, but I have a feeling that it would be absolutely divine with a shot of Armagnac)

I'm already a huge fan of their yogi tea (best chai base ever), though I find some of their pure blacks to be really tannic and rather dusty - even more so than similar varietals I get from other sources. For these I really prefer Adagio, as I think their teas have a much smoother taste. Still for blended teas or herbal/rooibus infusions, Copeland and Shaw are really quite hard to beat.

Here are a few miscellaneous Russian language questions I've had recently:

1. If someone uses an unfamiliar word, to clear up its meaning you can ask "Что это такое?" But if you want to re-use the word in your questions, does the "такое" change? For example "
-Мы сидели на скамейке.
-Что это такое?  или Что ТАКАЯ скамейка?

2. Are the words здороваться and прощаться used the same way that they are used in English in the following sense:
-We greet each other every morning by the supermarket - Мы здороваемся каждое утро возле супермаркета
-We said goodbye and I went to the train station - Мы прощались и я пошёл на вокзал

3. I've heard a Russian slang word that means something like "a slob" or an uncultured person -- it sounds something like хрюща, but I can't find it in the dictionary. Could you tell me what this word is?

Thanks
